Jakub Tokarczyk is a Polish composer and pianist based in Montreal, working at the intersection of film music, sound design, and performance. His practice moves fluidly between the concert stage, the dance studio, and the cinematic screen — always guided by a search for presence, breath, and emotional precision in sound.
Trained in classical piano and composition in Poland, later shaped by jazz studies in Paris and advanced composition for visual arts in Lyon and Montreal, Jakub developed a musical language that bridges structure and intuition. His background spans classical discipline, jazz improvisation, and contemporary composition, forming a foundation that allows him to navigate seamlessly between acoustic intimacy and immersive sonic environments.
His work focuses primarily on animated films, cinema, and dance. He composes original scores that integrate narrative clarity with textural depth, often blending orchestral writing with detailed sound design. Drawing from jazz, folk traditions, contemporary classical music, and experimental practices, he builds layered atmospheres shaped by polyrhythms, extended instrumental techniques, and expressive orchestration.
Parallel to his compositional work, Jakub collaborates closely with dancers as a pianist accompanist at the École supérieure de ballet du Québec and Ballet Jazz Montréal. Improvisation remains central to his artistic identity — a space where gesture, movement, and sound meet in real time.
For Jakub, music is not decorative; it is structural. It shapes perception, guides rhythm, and deepens the emotional architecture of a story. Whether working alone in the studio or alongside filmmakers and choreographers, he approaches each project with clarity, humility, and a commitment to serving the narrative through sound.
